What Is A Fusion Drive?

Is Fusion Drive an SSD or HDD? A Fusion Drive is a hybrid volume which uses two disks. Fusion Drives contain a hard disk drive and a solid-state drive. iMac computers with Fusion Drives use an SSD on the computer motherboard with a traditional HDD. macOS integrates the two drives, but files aren’t stored separately on the two drives. The macOS uses software RAID to create a single volume.

  • The SSD and the hard drive are logically alocated into a single block device.
  • A portion of SSD space is used as a write-back buffer to absorb incoming write data. The SSD is used as a type of Cache.
  • Recently accessed data is stored on the SSD. Large, static data is stored in the HDD.
  • Data which becomes frequenctly accessed will be become buffered onto the SSD.
